The concept of creating something new and unique with nothing more than an idea, some raw materials, a few tools and old fashioned hard work and dedication has always been very appealing to me. Looking back now, I realize I've always needed an outlet for that. It started with Construx building sets and obsessively sketching and doodling in my youth. Then to scrounging scraps of wood in my dad's garage and building random contraptions. I found myself tearing apart my bike (several times actually) just so I could repaint it, add new graphics and put it back together again.
As a teen, the local library would liquidate old magazines for 2 cents a piece and I would bring them home by the box load. They had everything from magazines covering athletics, music, outdoors, action and power sports, automotive, aviation, art, etc. Everything I was interested in at the time. It was thumbing through those endless stacks of magazines that I became really aware and drawn to the power of branding, advertising/marketing, design and imagery. It became a hobby for me and I began cutting out images, logos, ad elements, catchy taglines, marketing phrases and building a collage on my bedroom wall. The collage eventually grew to fill every square inch of all four walls of my room, floor to ceiling, including the face of the door and exterior and interior of the closet.
Later on when I realized that there were people out there making a living creating these designs, building brand identities, ads and imagery, I knew that's what I wanted to do. Now after years of schooling and more than eleven years in the creative industry, I'm still just as intrigued and excited about it as I was as a boy. To me the process and effect of design is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences. To conceptualize an idea, create a design, an image, a brand that is uniquely yours and have that then connect and create a response with your audience is a powerful thing.
